In this Against the Storm Building Guide, we'll tell you what you need to know about how buildings work in the game, how to get more buildings, and what each building can make for your town.
How Buildings Work in Against The Storm
Buildings in Against the Storm work a little differently than most other city-builder games, owing to its roguelite nature. Once you've figured out the basics of gameplay, you'll quickly realize that there is not any one "go-to" strategy that will help your town succeed.
You'll begin each game with a set of basic buildings, such as Shelters and the Woodcutters' Camp. Going forward, you'll unlock additional buildings when you earn Reputation points by completing tasks for the Queen or sending the loot from points of interest to the Citadel.
The real challenge, however, is that there are no guarantees that you will get the same building every time. It's possible, for example, to not encounter the Small Farm in your Reputation rewards at all; that would mean that you wouldn't be able to grow food through Farming and would have to instead get food through foraging or trading. Combine that with the random nature of maps and it's clear that flexibility in your strategy is the key to consistently winning.
How to Unlock More Buildings in Against the Storm
The random nature of Reptutation rewards aside, you can also increase your overall pool of available buildings by buying rewards from the Smoldering City. Many of these buildings are quite powerful and give you free bonuses (such as the Library or Market), so it's definitely worth it to get them.
What Against the Storm Building Should You Build First?
The first Against the Storm building you should erect is probably the Woodcutters' Camp -- you're going to want to immediately start Wood production to help keep the Hearth lit and provide materials for further construction.
As soon as you've placed it down, you should build roughly four Shelters. Putting a roof over your Villagers' heads is an easy way to keep their Resolve from depleting in the early game. Four Shelters will ensure that you have enough housing for everyone you begin an expedition with and a few extra people as well; make sure to pay attention to the population count on the top left of the screen to ensure that everyone has a home.
After that, your next building depends on what the lay of the land looks like. I like to build a Crude Workstation to start cranking out Planks at a slow pace as they will be needed for more advanced buildings. Your final early-game step should be to secure a source of Food, either through Farming or Foraging. Once you've handled the basics, your only remaining goal is to build up Resolve and win the game.
