Recently, Wizards of the Coast has announced a new Secret Lair for Magic: The Gathering. The aptly named Calling All Hydra Heads Secret Lair will not be available online, but will be available in limited quantities at certain participating retail stores.
The Calling All Hydra Heads Secret Lair Announcement
In an official Magic blog post, Wizards of the Coast provides some detail on the Calling All Hydra Heads Secret Lair. According to the post, local WPN stores will stock this Secret Lair.
As the name implies, Calling All Hydra Heads is a Secret Lair full of potent hydra cards with unique alternative artwork. The cards in this drop are as follows:
- Zaxara, The Exemplary
- Unbound Flourishing
- Primordial Hydra
- Hydroid Krasis
- Gargos, Vicious Watcher
- Hydra Token
The guest artist for the Calling All Hydra Heads Secret Lair is CatDirty. CatDirty's artwork is decidedly gonzo with psychedelic colors and pop surreal visuals. They are reminiscent of old blacklight posters.
Those acid trip visuals extend into the cards' descriptive text, messing with the clean borders and readability of normal Magic cards. Aside from the mana cost in the corner, this alternative illustration might make these too difficult to actually play in a game.
It must be restated that the stock of this Secret Lair will be limited. Usually, a new Secret Lair can be pre-ordered online. These are usually done to address the high demand for cards, usually ones that crossover with beloved series like Ponies: The Galloping 2 or cards illustrated by Junji Ito.
But with Calling All Hydra Heads, your best bet for getting this Secret Lair is finding a local WPN store and checking with them for additional details. This also means that stock will vary, and once they're gone they're gone.
The Calling All Hydra Heads Secret Lair is only available in English and in traditional foil. The Secret Lair will drop on December 8.
