Today CD Projekt announced its financial results for Q3, 2023, including some interesting information about Cyberpunk 2077 and the Witcher franchise.
We learn that the expansion of Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty has now sold over 4.3 million copies, with an estimated attachment ratio of 20%. CD Projekt's executives call this "a great result."
During the Q&A, the developers explained that the attachment ratio percentage considers only the sales of the base game on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, so the game has sold about 21.5 million copies on these platforms, excluding PS4 and Xbox One. Total sales are likely to be higher.
The developer had 220 developers working on Cyberpunk 2077, its expansion, and the Ultimate Edition at the end of October, but this figure will now decrease as they transfer to other projects on top of organizational changes at the company.
We also learn that the team working on project Polaris (the next Witcher game developer in Unreal Engine 5) is "steadily growing" and has reached almost 330 developers by the end of last month. CD Projekt expects it to grow to over 400 by mid-2024.
Speaking of financial results specifically, sales were 442.682 million Zloty, up a massive 80% year-on-year despite the fact that the same quarter last year was already strong.
Net profit was 202.864 million Zloty, up over twice as much as the profit recorded in the same period last year.
Interestingly, during the Q&A presentation, we heard that CD Projekt's team in Vancouver, Canada, currently includes about 40 developers, mostly working on the technical side. This team is growing and will provide support on the Cyberpunk franchise working directly with the team in Boston.
In Boston, The Molasses Flood is working on its own game, Project Sirius. On top of that, a team of 10 leaders from Cyberpunk 2077 is moving to Boston and they will be the foundation of the growth of the new Cyberpunk team.
CD Projekt has already started hiring for this team, including a new game director who has been in the role for "some time."
Project Orion, the next Cyberpunk game, is already in the concept phase but for the first year, the team working on it in Boston should be about 40-50 people. Project Polaris and building the team for Orion have the same priority for CD Projekt at the moment.
The studio is also working on projects "beyond video games" to enhance "the franchise flywheel" but they're not ready to give specifics. CD Projekt has "ambitions to do more in the animation field."
