An officially licensed D&D VR game is coming. The ubiquitous fantasy TTRPG's mainstream appeal has only grown thanks to the popularity of actual plays like Critical Role and the 2023 critical darling that was Baldur's Gate 3. Now, it seems the world of gelatinous cubes and magic missiles will be coming to VR headsets.

The D&D VR game announcement

According to an official press release, Hasbro has partnered with the VR game developer Resolution Games to produce a D&D VR Game. Resolution Games is a privately held Sweden-based developer that was founded in 2015.

Well, the developers are in the right mindset.

While Resolution Games has a solid history of well-received games, its biggest success is the 2021 VR dungeon crawler, Demeo. A game that, according to our review, " does make for a fantastic VR playground to meet friends, make memories, and share victories in."

With fifty years of history, lore, and characters, Resolution Games has plenty of material for its D&D VR game. A straightforward dungeon crawl in the depths of Waterdeep. A pulpy tale set in Eberron packed with Byronic angst. It could be just about anything.

“Resolution Games has a clear understanding of how to bring players together and capture the fun of tabletop gaming on digital platforms in an accessible way,” said Eugene Evans, SVP Digital Strategy and Licensing at Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro. “They are an ideal partner to bring a new DUNGEONS & DRAGONS video game to life in VR and beyond. Dungeons & Dragons and our other world class gaming brands continue to attract amazing partners as we execute our strategy to grow our digital games portfolio through licensing and internal development.”

At the time of writing, details are scarce on this D&D VR game. Aside from it being based on the property, it is unclear if the game will be single-player or multiplayer, online, or if it will be turn-based. But given the support Demeo received, there's a good chance it will be on both PC and PlayStation 5 via PSVR2.
