A magical portal set up in a house

In this guide, we'll tell you how a Valheim Portal works, how to unlock Portals, and why they're useful for getting around the world.

Chances are, if you've been following our guides on the Viking survival crafting sim, Valheim, you've been seeing item descriptions and online discussions about teleportation and portals. Considering just how dangerous and large this game's map can get, you wanna know how to make one of these for yourself to cut down on trips.

How a Valheim Portal Works

Valheim Portal can transport you from one point to another in just a few seconds. Portals are linked together with "Tags," a string of text that determines which two Portals are connected.

Keep in mind that these Tag words are case-sensitive. If you Tag one portal with the word "Cave" and the other with the word "cave," they will not be linked. Pay attention to spacing, capitalization, and character placement. Remember, only two Portals can be linked together!

Portals cannot be built in certain areas or instances. You can't build them in troll caves or burial grounds for example, and anything that is warded with ancient runes appears to be off-limits as well.

Otherwise, there appears to be no maximum distance on how far these portals can connect. If you really wanted to, you could set up a connection across the map, through multiple Biomes, and right into your fortress. If you put in the effort, a portal network can make travel a breeze.

First things first, we need materials.

How to Build a Portal in Valheim

Here's how to Build a Portal in Valheim. First, you'll need to collect the following items:

  • 2 Surtling Cores. These can be found in Burial Ground dungeons. Watch out and be ready for a fight, they're usually crawling with Skeletons.
  • 10 Greydwarf Eyes. These are dropped (naturally) by Greydwarves. They frequently pop up in the Black Forest. Be careful -- they usually fight in groups.
  • 20 Fine Wood. Only certain trees drop Fine Wood, and they can only be cut down by Bronze Axes or better.

Once you've assembled all of these items you should be able to Build a Portal as long as you're in range of a Workbench. Then, you'll have to give it a Tag. Once you do that, make a second Portal in a different location and Tag it with the exact same word. This will link the Portals.

A Message stating an item is preventing teleportation
Apparently contraband even exists with magical teleportation.

Some Items Cannot Be Teleported Through Portals in Valheim

Finally, certain items cannot be teleported through a Valheim Portal. Things like metal Ore or Bars will not allow you to go through a Portal as long as you're carrying them, although metal Tools, Weapons, and Armor are allowed. You also cannot transport certain special items such as the Dragon Eggs needed to summon Moder. Pay attention to the description of items and look for an icon marking them as items that can't be teleported through Portals.

What do you do if you have to transport an item that cannot go through a Portal over long distances? Unfortunately, there are only two solutions: traveling over land (either on foot or using a Cart) and using a Boat to cross the Ocean.

And that is how to make your own Portals in Valheim and how they function. Here's hoping this helps you survive a bit longer in this harsh Viking world. For more help, feel free to read our other guides and share them with others.
