This Hydroneer Multiplayer Guide will tell you how to play this sandbox crafting game with your friends, either with online multiplayer or local multiplayer.
How Hydroneer Multiplayer Works
Hydroneer multiplayer works using split-screen multiplayer and Steam Remote Play. There is no need for renting a server or anything like that.
How to Play Local Multiplayer
You can play Hydroneer in local multiplayer by clicking the button on the top-right of the screen and selecting "Add Local Player." From there, you can (and should) customize the appearance of both characters to give them a distinct visual look. Once you're all done, you can get right into playing!
How Hydroneer Local Multiplayer Controls Work
Unfortunately, there are not yet distinct keyboard options for a second local player. I can confirm that a gamepad will automatically be detected as Player 2; there is no other option built into the menus.
How to Play Hydroneer Online
You can play online Hydroneer multiplayer using Steam Remote Play. Clicking "Invite Player" on the top-right screen of the menu will open up the Remote Play interface and allow you to invite someone else to play along. The second player will not need to own a copy of the game to play with you.
Do You Have to Use Splitscreen in Hydroneer?
Yes, unfortunately, you have to use Splitscreen in Hydroneer Multiplayer. This may change at a later date if a better physics engine is discovered by the developer.
Will Hydroneer Ever Get Better Multiplayer?
As its developer explains in this video, the game's physics engine would have too many problems with online play and with the development resources at hand. However, that could change in the future. For now, there is at least some kind of multiplayer that will let you play together with your friends.
