Developer Saber Interactive revealed a new collaboration with horror film master John Carper with the announcement of John Carpenter's Toxic Commando at Summer Game Fest. Set to release in 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via the Epic Games Store, players can team up with up to four friends for an intense first-person shooter battle where they will encounter hordes of mutated foes with the goal of eliminating a supernatural outbreak before it's too late. The announcement trailer shows off the first glimpse of the game's 80's inspired action and wacky gameplay.
"We're excited to partner with our friends at Focus again, and thrilled to collaborate with the legendary John Carpenter on this project," says Tim Willits, Chief Creative Officer at Saber Interactive. "His unique vision, unparalleled expertise in storytelling, and ability to create immersive atmospheres have helped us to elevate this all-new, 80s-inspired experience to the next level. His works have been an inspiration for years and it's an honor to work alongside him to deliver a truly unforgettable adventure."
The story of John Carpenter's Toxic Commando tells of a near future, in which an experimental attempt to harness the power of the Earth's core ends in disaster that results in the release of the Sludge God. This abomination begins terraforming the area and turning all there is into undead monsters. Naturally, the guy behind the experiments tries to make things right and he'll need a team to do it. That's where the titular Toxic Commandos come in.
Players will take control of one of the commandos, team up with friends and choose between classes that match their playstyle with an array of guns, grenades, and special abilities at their disposal. A closed beta test will be available for sign-ups 18 and over. Anyone interested can register for the beta starting today at the official website.
