Our Paleo Pines Dinosaur Taming Guide will tell you where to find Dinosaurs, how to Tame them, and the Friend Call of every Dinosaur we've found! We'll also tell you the Skills, favorite treat, pen size, and more.
As you might expect, a big part of Paleo Pines is Taming Dinosaurs and getting them to live on your Ranch. The first few days of the game will be pretty slow, but you'll soon build up a veritable army of Dinosaurs that will help you on your Farm. Read on to learn everything you need to know about Taming Dinosaurs!
How Paleo Pines Dinosaur Taming Works
Paleo Pines Dinosaur Taming operates on a simple 4-step process. Here's how it works
- Get a Dinosaur's attention with your Flute -- press 1 (the red note) three times to execute the "Yoo Hoo" command and get the Dinosaur to pay attention to you.
- Play the Friend Call for that Dinosaur. You'll have to copy the pattern of notes the Dinosaur sings for you. (You can find Friend Calls for all of the Dinosaurs we've found further down in this guide!)
- Play the Taming minigame. The meter on the bottom right ranges from "boredom" on the left to "excited" on the right with a green "sweet spot" somewhere in the middle. You need to use the "Feed" and "Soothe" commands to move the meter into the green.
- Feed will increase a Dinosaur's energy (to the right). Naturally, you'll need some kind of Crop or other Food item to feed the Dinosaur.
- Soothe will decrease the Dinosaur's energy with a simple gesture.
- Befriend will feed the Dinosaur a Poppin (which you can buy in Pebble Plaza). Each Dinosaur has a preferred Poppin; feed it the wrong one and the Dinosaur will run off.
- If you've successfully befriended a Dinosaur, a message will pop up saying that it trusts you. You can then pat the Dinosaur on the head to officially befriend it.
Once a Dinosaur is befriended, you'll need to take it back to the ranch and lead it into a pen. You then must bring up the Flute and play "This is Your Home Now" to get the Dinosaur to stay there.
The status of a Dinosaur (and what they need) can be checked in your Journal. You'll need to give it a Dreamstone, Food, and a Pen. You'll also need to keep that Pen clean.
If you keep a Dinosaur's Pen clean and meet its other needs (such as having the correct Social group), the Dinosaur will stay a "Friend." Keep the Dinosaur happy and it will become a "Helper," allowing you to place a Saddle on it and ride it (or have it follow you around if it's too small for a Saddle). The ability to ride a Dinosaur also gives you the ability to use its unique Skills and, more importantly, its Stamina -- massively increasing your ability to tend to your Farm.
How Dinosaur Skills Work in Paleo Pines
The Dinosaurs you can Tame aren't just for show -- they're legitimate working animals. There are a total of 10 Dinosaur Skills in Paleo Pines, each of which has a different effect.
Using a Skill will consume some of a Dinosaur's Stamina. When the Dinosaur's Stamina runs out, it can't use its Skills for the rest of the day.
Every Dinosaur has 2 Dinosaur Skills. Collecting the right Skills will let you open up new areas of the Map!
List of Paleo Pines Dinosaur Skills
Skill | Icon | Description |
---|---|---|
Clearer | The Clearer Skill allows a Dinosaur to remove any small ground debris on the Ranch. It also allows the Dinosaur to dig up Truffles in the wild. | |
Discoverer | The Discoverer Skill causes a Dinosaur to call out when it finds a wild plant that you can harvest. | |
Ground Harvester | The Ground Harvester Skill allows a Dinosaur to harvest a wide area of Crops. | |
Slasher | The Slasher Skill allows a Dinosaur to destroy certain Bushes and open up new paths. These Bushes are also a good source of Fiber. | |
Smasher | The Smasher Skill allows a Dinosaur to break rocks and open up new paths. Understandably, these rocks are also a good source of Stone. | |
Sprinter | The Sprinter Skill allows a Dinosaur to run faster while you're riding them. Sprinting consumes Stamina over time, but it also builds up experience as if you were using any other Skill. | |
Stomper | The Stomper Skill allows a Dinosaur to break Logs which can open up new paths. These Logs are also a good source of Wood. | |
Tender | Unfortunately, we don't yet know what the Tender Skill does. | |
Tiller | The Tiller Skill allows a Dinosaur to till Farming Plots as long as you hold down left-click. Tilling consumes Stamina. | |
Waterer | The Waterer Skill allows a Dinosaur to suck up water from a Pond and spray it on your Farming Plots. Dinosaurs walk slower when carrying water in their mouth, even if they have the Sprinter Skill. |
Where to Find Dinosaurs in Paleo Pines
You can find Dinosaurs in Paleo Pines on all three regions of the Map: Veridian Valley, Dapplewood, and Ariacotta Canyon. Typically, Dinosaurs can be found away from populated areas.
Sometimes, Dinosaurs will be in an inaccessible area that is blocked by a log, a boulder, or bushes. You'll need the correct kind of Dinosaur in order to break through these barriers as outlined in the preceding section on Dinosaur Skills.
The Maps below will show you where I've confirmed Dinosaur spawns. Keep in mind, however, that Dinosaurs may sometimes move. I suspect that some Dinosaurs may only be available at certain times of the day, too, but I haven't been able to confirm it -- if you can't find a Dinosaur you're looking for, try coming back to the same area at a different time!

How We Transcribe Friend Calls in Paleo Pines
One of the things we cover in this Paleo Pines Dinosaur Taming Guide is "Friend Calls" -- a unique series of notes played on your Flute that is required to befriend a Dinosaur. I've created a simple notation system to show how you can play the Friend Call.
Take a look at the image below. On the left is the interface for the Flute when you're playing it. On the right is a Friend Call from one of the Dinosaurs.
A single circle is a short note, a circle with one outer circle is a medium-length note, and a circle with two outer circles is a long note. Obviously, the colors correspond to the numbers shown on the interface on the left.
I've chosen to use the numbers for each note to represent the Friend Calls as follows:
- 1 = short note
- 11 = medium-length note
- 111 = long note
Using this system, the Friend Call in the example image above would be transcribed as follows:
2 4 1 3 111 3 111
All of the Friend Calls in our Dinosaur list use this system. It shouldn't be too difficult to figure out. If you do have problems, though, you can do things the old-fashioned way and simply watch the icons when you're trying to Tame a Dinosaur.
