Your Housing Plot is where you'll do most of your Crafting and decorating in Palia, but that's not all it's for -- it's also the place where you'll be able to grow your very own Food. Every Crop brings something different to the table -- read on to learn more about Gardening!

How to Unlock Gardening, The Hoe, and the Watering Can

You can unlock Gardening in Palia by completing the "Welcome to Palia" Quest, leaving your Housing Plot, and then speaking to Bardruu and asking him, "Can you teach me to garden?" Badruu says he will meet you at your Housing Plot. Meet him there and he'll teach you how to Garden.

Best Crops to Grow

The best Crops to grow are Apples. Unfortunately, you won't be able to access Apples until you've reached Level 10 in Gardening and acquired some Gardening Skill Medals. The second-best Crop to grow is Blueberries. Those, too, require Gardening Skill Medals to purchase and you can't get them until Level 10, generally speaking.

Apples and Blueberries aside, the best Crop to grow is Tomatoes. They're enormously profitable and you won't have to replant them every time they grow. Additionally, they're Vegetables -- that means that you can use them in many early-game Cooking recipes such as Hearty Vegetable Soup.

How Palia Gardening Works

Palia Gardening is a little more complex than you might expect from such a cozy game. Each and every Crop has special effects and different uses, so it's important to understand what you're doing before you just go and plant some random Seeds.

First, you'll need to get some Soil. Badruu will give you two pieces of Soil for free at the beginning of the game. After that, you'll have to purchase additional pieces of Soil from him for Gold.

Once you've placed the Soil down, you'll need to till it with your Hoe. Then, you can plant Seeds. Finally, you'll have to water your Seeds and wait for them to grow.

The actual growth of your plants happens at 6:00 AM Palian Time every day -- that's 15 minutes past the hour. You'll need to harvest them, remove any weeds, and water them again before 6:00 AM Palian Time the following day if you want them to keep growing.

Occasionally, harvesting a Crop will remove the tilled Soil. When that happens, you'll have to Till it again before you can plant another Crop.

Unfortunately, you cannot remove any Crops once you've planted them. You'll have to wait for them to grow to free up the slots.

You can move Soil plots at any time, even if they have Crops in them. However, you cannot move a Soil plot if it has a larger Crop (such as Blueberries) occupying spaces on 2 separate Soil plots.

The produce you'll get from Gardening is valuable enough in its own right. You can use it for Cooking as well as some Furniture Recipes. However, the true earning potential lies in turning Crops into Preserves or Seeds and selling those.

How to Get More Soil

You can get more Soil (Gardening Plots) by purchasing them from Badruu for Gold. Bear in mind that each subsequent purchase will increase in price.

You can have a maximum of 9 Soil, regardless of how many Housing Plots you have.

How to Upgrade the Hoe

You can upgrade the Hoe by reaching Level 3 in Gardening and speaking with Badruu. You can then purchase the Standard Hoe Recipe for 500 Gold.

You'll need to get some Copper with Mining and some Sapwood Planks with Foraging to actually Craft it. Subsequent upgrades will require better materials, such as Iron and Heartwood.

How to Upgrade the Watering Can

You can upgrade the Hoe by reaching Level 3 in Gardening and speaking with Badruu. You can then purchase the Standard Watering Can Recipe for 500 Gold.

You'll need to get some Copper with Mining and some Sapwood Planks with Foraging to actually Craft it. Subsequent upgrades will require better materials, such as Iron and Heartwood.

How to Get Fertilizer

There are three main ways to get Fertilizer in Palia:

1. Crafting it after unlocking the Recipes in the Gardening Store.
2. Getting it as a byproduct from the Worm Farm, which you unlock with Fishing.
3. Purchasing it from the Gardening Skill Store with Gardening Skill Medals.

Where to Buy Seeds

You can buy Seeds for Gardening in the General Store by accessing the cash register, 24 hours a day.

You can also get Seeds by Crafting a Seed Collector; you can unlock the Seed Collector Recipe in the Gardening Skill Store once you reach Level 2.

Where to Buy Crops

If you need any Crops in a hurry, you can purchase them from the Crop Store at the Family Farm. Be warned, though, that they are pretty pricey compared to just growing them yourself.
