The PlayStation 5 is Sony's fifth home console, releasing worldwide on November 19, 2020. Due to supply shortages, the consoles release into further Asian countries was delayed until the following year.
Two versions of the PlayStation 5 have been made available since launch: the base model with a Blu-ray drive, and a "Digital Edition" with this removed. The latter serves as a cheaper alternative, similar to Microsoft's strategy with the Xbox Series S (though the Digital Edition still features the same hardware).
Backwards compatibility is available for the majority of PlayStation 4 titles — some previous generation games can be played on PS5 via streaming or emulation.
