The Pokemon Company has issued a statement obviously related to Pocketpair's new crafting survival game Palworld, without actually mentioning it by name.
The statement mentions that the company has received many inquiries regarding another company's title released in January 2021 and clarifies (if there was any need for it) that it has not granted any permission to use any Pokemon intellectual property or assets in that game.
It also mentions the intention to investigate and act on any infringement on the intellectual property rights related to the Pokemon,
Below you can read the full statement.
We have received many inquiries regarding another company’s game released in January 2024. We have not granted any permission for the use of Pokémon intellectual property or assets in that game. We intend to investigate and take appropriate measures to address any acts that infringe on intellectual property rights related to the Pokémon.
We will continue to cherish and nurture each and every Pokémon and its world, and work to bring the world together through Pokémon in the future.
It's worth mentioning that Nintendo has reportedly already acted to suppress a Palworld mod that introduced actual Pokemon into the game.
In the meanwhile, the commercial success of Poketpair's game continues, as the company has announced on X (formerly Twitter) that Palworld has sold over 8 million copies on Steam. It has also surpassed 2 million concurrent players on Valve's platform (according to the monitoring portal SteamDB), which isn't bad at all for an indie game.
This is the second-highest peak concurrent user number ever on Steam, behind PUBG.
Unfortunately, the popular game, which is currently available on PC, Xbox, and Game éass, has also attracted controversy, with Pocketpair's CEO denouncing death threats and slander directed at the game's artists.
That being said, Pocketpair is planning to continue supporting the Palworld throughout the early access phase and has revealed a roadmap with plenty of additions, albeit the developers will address the issues plaguing connectivity and gameplay first.
