The Kickstarter campaign for Stormgate, a spiritual successor of Starcraft by Frost Giant Studios, has just concluded successfully.
28,143 backers pledged $2,380,701 for the game on Kickstarter, which is 2380% of the fairly modest original $100,000 goal.
The campaign immediately showed itself as a winner, reaching and overtaking its funding goal in 15 minutes when it launched back in December.
The modest original goal is explained by the fact that the development of the game itself was already funded. The Kickstarter campaign's basic aim was to produce a physical Collector's Edition. Yet, the success of the crowdfunding campaign means that plenty of gameplay and content-related stretch goals have been unlocked.
These include an Arctic Tileset, HUD skins, additional 3vE weekly Mutators, a new player assist tool, a 3v3 mode early preview, expanded bot personalities, profile portraits, advanced hero customization, a WebToon series, and an early preview of the editor.
Interestingly, you don't need to wait long to give Stormgate a try. While the game had a few closed testing rounds, an open beta is coming for Steam Next Fest on February 5 throughout February 12.
It'll include a 3-player co-op vs. AI mode featuring two playable heroes and competitive 1v1 with no heroes. Custom lobbies will also be available.
If you have not heard about Stormgate before, it's a classic-style RTS that will certainly bring back memories of Blizzard's Starcraft.
That's not surprising, considering that it's being developed by a team built around a core of Starcraft 2 and Warcraft 3 veterans. It was announced in June 2022 and then showcased at several events including the PC Gaming show in June 2023 and Gamescom in August 2023.
The game is coming to Steam and it's made un Unreal Engine 5. You can already wishlist it. For the moment, it does not yet have a firm release date.
