A dog modded into Stray

Modders are creating some pretty cute Stray mods now that the game is finally here. If you've ever wanted to swap the adorable kitty for a cute doggo, there's a mod for that, and you'll also find mods for piratical eyepatches, custom kitty fur patterns, and, of course, horrifying abominations.

What kind of Stray mods are users creating?

Long-awaited kitty adventure game Stray is finally upon us, and it's proven immensely popular. Players are citing the cuteness of Stray's central subject, who's based on a real cat, as well as the game's strong atmosphere and compelling story as reasons for loving it. As you might expect, though, modders have their own ideas of what they want to see in the game, and so they're creating some pretty impressive Stray mods, adding in everything from doggo protagonists to long-limbed monstrosities right out of a David Cronenberg movie.

Happy Puppy, one of the many Stray mods created by users in recent days
Naturally, there's a Stray mod that lets you play as a doggo.

Perhaps the obvious place to start is Chris Rubino's Happy Puppy mod, which lets you explore Stray's cyberpunk city as a pupper. If you prefer to keep things feline, you'll find lots of mods that change the central cat character's color and markings; there are mods for black cats, tuxies, and Siamese friends, and you'll also find mods that add an eyepatch or a newsboy cap to your cute kitty. Adorably, modders are also modding in their own cats, as well as pets that other users have requestedStray's cat protagonist is unnamed and of indeterminate gender, so it's pretty easy to see why modders and players want to play through the adventure as their own little buddies.

Of course, it wouldn't be a Stray mod roundup without a nod to some of the more horrifying makeovers you can give to Stray's feline hero. Special mention goes to this nightmare, created by modder sir_galahad172, that transforms the unnamed cat into a horrifying atrocity bearing the face of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas protagonist CJ. Shudder. There are also a couple of mods replacing the adorable meow button with soundbites from Heavy Rain and, somewhat bizarrely, clips from the Family Guy parody of Maroon 5's "Memories". Right. Obviously, there's also a mod to play as Garfield. Just make sure you don't fire the game up on Mondays, or it will immediately shut itself off. Probably.

What is Stray?

Stray is a cyberpunk action-adventure game developed by BlueTwelve Studio and published by Annapurna Interactive. It stars an unnamed cat who must navigate a city filled with robotic inhabitants in order to unravel the mystery at its center (and we all know how much cats like to unravel things). This being a game where you play as a cat, there are, of course, buttons to meow, rub around people's legs, and go to sleep; in fact, there's a trophy for sleeping for an hour, which doesn't sound like anywhere near enough for all the cats I know.

Adorable feline adventure Stray has captured the hearts of gamers around the world.

You can adopt Stray right now on PC and PlayStation consoles. If you decide to play on console, you'll also be able to play Stray if you sign up for the PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium tiers. Given that BlueTwelve's cute cat game is now the highest-rated game released in 2022 on Steam, you're in good company if you do check it out. Make sure you take a look at our Stray guide hub if you're currently playing through the game, as there are quite a few tricky little collectibles that you might not spot on a first playthrough.
