King of Tokyo and its sequel King of New York are dice based board games released in 2011 and 2014 by IELLO. We've recently reviewed both games, along with several of the expansions. We decided to produce this quick reference guide to the products to assist players with the purchases, so they can see what each expansion is, the score we gave it and which products it will work with.
TechRaptor's King of Tokyo (and more) Guide
King of Tokyo (KoT) (1st Edition - 2011)
Review - 8/10
King of Tokyo is a dice board game suitable for all ages. It allows up to six players to battle it out with a monster, fighting over Tokyo. Each turn, players have to decide between collecting victory points, damaging other monsters, healing their own monster, or saving up and buying special upgrade cards, all decided by the roll of the dice.
The Monsters from KoT 1st Edition can be used in KoT 2nd Edition and KoNY.
King of Tokyo (KoT) (2nd Edition - 2016)
Review - 9/10
The 2nd Edition changes two monsters from the original edition (Kraken and Cyber Bunny are replaced with Cyber Kitty and Space Penguin). Other updates are new art for the monsters and upgrades cards and a refined rulebook.
Can be used with: The Monsters from KoT 2nd Edition can be used in KoT 1st Edition and KoNY.
King of Tokyo (KoT) (Dark Edition - 2020)
The Limited Edition King of Tokyo Dark Edition contains special graphically dark components for KoT. The new dice are especially awesome. It also includes a new rule option with Wickedness points and details on a 2-player KoT game variety. It's an awesome-looking product, and even previous owners of KoT should grab a copy for their collection.
Can be used with all KoT and KoNY monsters and their Power-Up! Expansions.
King of New York (KoNY) (2014)
Review - 9/10
King of New York is similar to King of Tokyo, but it has a few extra details that make it more tactically challenging. King of New York adds buildings and units into the game, along with restricting where victory points can be earned, to add an extra challenge for the monsters.
It can be used with KoT 1st Edition and KoT 2nd Edition.
King of Tokyo: Power Up!

King of New Tokyo Power Up! adds a set of unique evolution cards for each monster from the King of Tokyo 1st and 2nd Editions.
Can be used with King of Tokyo 1st or 2nd Edition.
King of New York: Power Up!
Review - 9/10
King of New Tokyo Power Up! adds a set of unique evolution cards for each monster from the King of New York and allows you to use them in King of Tokyo as well.
Can be used with: Requires King of New York to use. Also includes Evolution cards for KoNY monsters to be used in KoT.
Cthulhu Monster Pack
Review - 8/10
The Cthulhu Monster Pack adds another monster for your King of Tokyo and King of New York games, along with the evolution cards for both. It also adds another building and unit type.
Requires King of Tokyo or King of New York to use. To use the Evolution cards, King of Tokyo Power Up! or King of New York Power Up! is required as well.
King Kong Monster Pack
Review - 8/10
The King Kong Monster Pack adds another monster for your King of Tokyo and King of New York games, along with the evolution cards for both. It also adds the Empire State Building and Tokyo Tower as another win condition for your games.
Requires King of Tokyo or King of New York to use. To use the Evolution cards, King of Tokyo Power Up! or King of New York Power Up! is required as well.
