It's time for This Week in Valheim once again! This week, we have a bunch of cool builds, a real-world recipe for Tasty Mead, the epic conclusion to a months-long fanart project, and more!
This Week in Valheim News
There's a bit more Valheim news this week, although we still haven't gotten that Hearth and Home Update that we've been waiting for.
Valheim Development Update for May 28, 2021
Iron Gate has provided a Valheim development update, detailing what's been going on with the studio over the last few weeks. Aside from interviewing new potential employees, the developers have bought a pony for a riding club. The devs clearly state that this doesn't mean that they'll be introducing horses into the game; that said, they certainly do have convenient access to a reference model if they choose to add this in an update at some point.
Work on the Valheim "Hearth and Home" Update is progressing; several features and mechanics have been finalized over the last month. That said, they're not quite done, and they don't want to reveal a release date until they're certain it's good to go. We also got a couple of teaser images this time, although there's really not much that you can tell from these pictures.
Finally, the Valheim developers will be hosting "some sort of Q&A" session as early as June 2021. If you have a question for the devs, you can leave a comment on today's Steam Community announcement.
This Week in Valheim Community Creations
Fan art, cool builds, and more—the Valheim community is constantly cranking out new content. Here's some of the cooler stuff we saw this week!
MRMNG Completes His Quest to Draw the Valheim Mobs
MRMNG has completed his epic quest to draw every single creature in Valheim, the result of which is the beautiful collage you see above. His Reddit submission announcing the feat became the top-voted post on /r/valheim for the week, and it's easy to see why—he did a really excellent job. He reckons he might still do more Valheim drawings, though; you can follow him on Reddit, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and Twitch to see what other cool stuff he comes up with.
A Cozy Castle
Not all Valheim builds have to be big to look good. /u/Versaugh showed off his cozy castle on Reddit, and it's got a pretty great level of detail—check out the Reddit submission for more pictures!
Taking a Dip
Sometimes you just want to practice your swimming without getting carried out to sea. That's as good a reason as any to install a pool, and /y/XenomusBunny on Reddit did just that. This isn't just a hole in the ground, mind; this crafty Viking installed stone, a staircase for easy egress, and some nice underwater lights—and the rest of the base doesn't look half bad, either.
Real-World Tasty Mead (with a Recipe!)
Brewing meads and potions in Valheim is critical to surviving against some of the tougher biomes and bosses, but one Redditor took it a step further by making actual mead based on the "Tasty Mead" item in the game.
Here's the recipe shared by /u/timscream1 on Reddit, though I should caution you: making mead in the real world can be a little more challenging! Take your time, read carefully, and be prepared to fail.
For 1 gallon:
- 500g liquid honey
- Water to 1 gallon
- 500g raspberries 250g [blueberries]
- Nutrients: Fermaid O (added at 1/3 sugar breakdown)
- One packet RedStar premier wine yeast rehydrated in GoFerm.
- OG = 1.050, FG= 1.000 (6.5% ABV)
After the end of the fermentation, I cold crashed the mead for two days and then siphoned out the brew, leaving behind the yeast and fruits (I put a hop bag on my racking cane as a filter)
Once in the new carboy, I added bentonite and left it ten days to clear up.
I siphoned out the mead leaving [behind] some more sediments. I bottled conditioned it with carbonation drops (8g/L of sugar) and added a [tablespoon] or erythritol per 33cl bottle.
I then left it for 2 weeks at room temperature to carbonate.
Skål!
This Week in Valheim Mods
Modders have been busy bees ever since the game came out; here are some of the new developments in Valheim mods over the last week!
SkillCapper Makes Valheim Harder on Purpose
Mods don't necessarily have to make a game easier, and that's exactly what SkillCapper is all about. This mod can set an upper limit on any skill in the game, allowing you to restrict your progress on everything from unarmed combat to swimming. You can get it on Nexus and Thunderstore.
Valheim Legends Mod Gets an Updated
The Valheim Legends Mod has gotten an update featuring a bit of digital housekeeping—the folder structure has been fixed to deal with some problems the original version of the mod was apparently having. Get it for yourself on Nexus and Thunderstore!
The Bone Appetit Mod Adds More Food
The upcoming "Hearth and Home" Update is going to add some more cooking, but why wait? Get the Bone Appetit mod on Nexus or Thunderstore and you can stuff your face with pork rings, kabobs, and even ice cream!
Make the Most of Your Item Stands
One of the downsides of item stands is that you can't put everything on them. The "Item Stand All Items" Mod (Nexus, Thunderstore) changes that by removing these restrictions entirely. It's sure to be super convenient for people who like to decorate!
Valheim Must-See Moments: May 22–29, 2021
Here are some of the cooler Valheim moments captured on camera this week!
Running the Gauntlet
Defending your base can be a challenge—after all, building in Valheim is an art unto itself. However, complexity and effectiveness don't necessarily go hand in hand; sometimes, a simple, well-designed solution is enough to get the job done.
That's why /u/ButterscotchPure4043 showed off this simple (but effective!) gauntlet design on Reddit. Players can navigate the tight spaces if they're careful, but enemies both large and small aren't that lucky—watch what happens!
Come Sail Away, Come Sail Away with Me
Earlier this month, I showed off a few cool building designs you can make in Valheim that are more about looking cool than being practical. One of these designs is building your own little island hideaway, but I took care to mention that you have to be cautious of rising waters (especially during a storm).
Now, /u/warshop on Reddit shows us exactly what happens if you're not careful when building an island home. Next time, consider building that base just a little bit taller!
Tree Dominoes
Wood is something you'll always need in Valheim, and /u/Karmacozzy2005 shows us the right way to go about it: just treat your tree farm like a giant game of dominoes.
And that's it for This Week in Valheim! We'll see you again next week with more community creations, mods, and more — why not check out our Valheim guides in the meantime and brush up on your Viking lore?
