A beloved licensed RPG is coming out of print. Palladium Books, in partnership with Paramount, will be bringing remastered versions of the TMNT & Other Strangeness TTRPG to new audiences. Better still, these books will feature new artwork by one of the original creators.
The TMNT & Other Strangeness RPG Remaster Announcement
According to an ICV2 report, Palladium Books will be launching a Kickstarter campaign for the TMNT & Other Strangeness RPG. The campaign will attempt to revive the game's core rulebook and its two sourcebooks as two deluxe hardcover editions.
TMNT & Other Strangeness was originally authored by Erick Wujick and published by Palladium Books in 1985. It is a TTRPG where you play as a mutated animal, complete with unique skills, training, and abilities.
This RPG adapted the tone and style of the original comic universe of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It treated its absurd premise of ninjas, mutants, and rampant gang warfare with deadpan seriousness. In addition, it featured a more nuanced alignment system with terms like "principled" or "miscreant."
While the TMNT & Other Strangeness RPG did have its fans, its reception was marred by the more recent TV show and live-action movies featuring the heroes in a half shell. Fans of the comic skewed older, whereas the show and movies were meant more for kids.
Since the RPG's release, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has become a pop culture institution. In addition to multiple animated adaptations, the turtles have shown up in video games from SMITE to Injustice 2 to TMNT: The Cowabunga Collection.
As for appealing to kids, a new generation of children were introduced to the world of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles thanks to their latest animated movie, Mutant Mayhem, released by Paramount Pictures.
The design for the remastered TMNT & Other Strangeness RPG books will be handled by Sean Owen Roberson. Roberson has been a part of the industry since the 1990s, his work including Warhammer 40k: Wrath and Glory, and the Rifts for Savage Worlds product line.
But the biggest draw for older Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans is new art by one of the original creators. Kevin Eastman will render a brand-new painted cover for the remastered core rulebook.
“I am 1000% onboard to help bring this historic and original TMNT Role Playing Game series back in a truly deluxe collector’s edition that will thrill original fans and open the door for new ones,” said Eastman. “I've made all my archives available for expanded behind-the-scenes content as well as a few top secret surprises you need to be part of. The remastered books for the TMNT & Other Strangeness RPG will contain new artwork, tributes to the original RPG's creators, and bonus material. Furthermore, the Kickstarter will have exclusive material like miniatures, dice, variant book covers, art prints, a card deck, and more.
The Kickstarter campaign will go live on October 31.
