Valheim Farming Guide

This Valheim Farming Guide will tell you how Farming works, where you can find all of the Crops, and the best place to Farm in the game!

How Valheim Farming Works

Generally speaking, Valheim Farming works through a simple process of planting Crops, harvesting them, and replanting a portion of the harvest. You'll need a Cultivator in order to do Farming.

While the general principles are the same for all Crops, each Crop has its own requirements. Most Crops can only be planted in certain Biomes, and certain Crops have different planting and harvesting cycles compared to others; read on for the details!

How to Unlock Farming in Valheim

You can unlock Farming in Valheim once you've acquired a Seed and Crafted a Cultivator; the Cultivator is a tool that requires Bronze, so you won't be able to get it until you've explored the Black Forest. The Black Forest also happens to be the location of Carrot Seeds (which will likely be your first Crop).

What Can't You Farm in Valheim?

You cannot Farm the following plants in Valheim:

  • Blueberries
  • Bukeperries
  • Cloudberries
  • Dandelion
  • Raspberries
  • Red Mushroom
  • Thistle
  • Yellow Mushroom

That said, everything except Bukeperries will regrow in the same place you found it after a short time, so make sure to mark down the locations where you found them!

How to Farm Carrots, Turnips, and Onions

Carrots, Turnips, and Onions all have "Seed" versions of their Crops that yield 3 Seeds. Seed Crops are planted using one of the Crops you've harvested to make Seeds. Here's how it works:

  1. Use a Carrot to plant a Seed Carrot
  2. Wait for the Seed Carrot to grow
  3. Harvest the Seed Carrot to get 3 Carrot Seeds
  4. Plant the Carrot Seeds
  5. Wait for the Carrots to grow
  6. Harvest the Carrots

Each Carrot, Turnip, or Onion can produce 3 Seeds for that plant. As a general rule, you should save 1/3 of your harvest of these plants for replanting.

How to Farm Barley and Flax

Barley and Flax only grow in the Plains Biome, so you'll have to plant them there. It's a good idea to surround your Farming plot with walls so you don't get stabbed to death by Deathsquitos. Adding a trench around the Farming area can also protect your Crops from Fulings and Lox.

Both Barley and Flax will give 2 Crops once harvested. That means you should hold onto 1/2 of your harvest for replanting if you want to maintain the same level of growth.

How to Farm Jotun Puffs and Magecap

Jotun Puffs and Magecaps are only found in the Mistlands Biome, and they can only grow there, too.

Unfortunately, arable soil in the Mistlands comes at a premium. You won't have much space to plant these Crops. You should do your best to protect the area with walls and trenches where possible, and you shouldn't count on being able to build large, open areas for Farming in the Mistlands without a lot of work.

Best Place to Plant Crops in Valheim

The best place to plant Crops in Valheim is the Plains Biome. While it has some of the toughest enemies in the Early Access version of the game, it also is the only place where you can grow five of the seven plantable Crops: Carrots, Turnips, Onions, Barley, and Flax.

Only Jotun Puffs and Magecap cannot be planted in the Plains. That means you'll have to have a second Farming base somewhere in the Mistlands to grow these Crops.
