The Seraphon have landed once again in Warhammer Age of Sigmar and are bringing their dinosaur-meets-Aztec vibe to the game with a host of new models. From Wizards who can unwrite some of the basic rules of the game, to hulking dino-men bearing heavy clubs, this week’s batch of releases going up for pre-order is super-exciting. Games Workshop sent us some samples to check out, along with the Battletome for the Seraphon, so read on for our thoughts.
Want to catch up on the Seraphon? We just put together a major review of the big Seraphon Army Set that was just released. And for more Age of Sigmar goodness, check out our preview of Warcry: Nightmare Quest, the latest release from the Age of Sigmar skirmish game. Now, onto the new Seraphon releases!
Warhammer Age of Sigmar Seraphon - Skink Starseer
Let’s start with the Skink Starseer, this Hero Wizard can attempt to cast and unbind two spells per hero phase, and has an extremely interesting spell with an effect we don’t see too often. Called “Celestial Doom,” with a successful cast on a 7, you can choose an enemy unit within range and until end of turn they can’t use their ward saving throw. This is wild, considering how crucial ward saves are to keeping your most important units alive.
Beyond this cool spell, the rest of his abilities and stats aren’t too exciting. But I can see some really nice synergies where you’re pairing him with some of the units in this army with impressive Rend to really punch some damage through.
Warhammer Age of Sigmar Seraphon - Kroxigor
The Kroxigor are the strong silent type, who lumber into battle surrounded by Skinks (and can even be commanded by Skink champions within 12” of them). Fairly straightforward to play, these brutes add some much-needed muscle to this magic-heavy army.
Plus, after you fight your opponents, you can attempt to bite them with your Vice-like Jaws ability, which in my mind is just such a cool visual to imagine. It’s moments like this, pulled from the flavor of a special ability, that breathe so much life into an army.
Warhammer Age of Sigmar Seraphon - Spawn Of Chotec
There aren’t many models in the Warhammer Age of Sigmar line that are quite as cool looking, in my opinion, as the Spawn of Chotec. Accompanied by a crew of Seraphon with celestial goads, this long, low, fiery lizard is all about shooting molten projectiles at the enemy.
What I most love about this model is the way its fiery breath can take two different forms. You can either hurl a glob of fiery acid at your enemies, which melts their armor and gives them a -1 save for the turn. Or you can shoot a stream of white-hot fire, and the Attacks characteristic equals the number of models in a unit (up to 10). This flexibility on display is somewhat rare to find in ranged attacks (we usually see it in sweeping vs. strike attacks from melee weapons).
Warhammer Age of Sigmar Seraphon - Aggradon Lancers
The Aggradon Lancers are a fun, fast, and mobile unit in the Seraphon army. Mounted on the Velociraptor-like Aggradon beasts, these Seraphon can move quickly with an 8” move, strike hard with either spears or clubs, and when their mounts smell the enemy they go into a rage.
This last point comes into play with their “Primal Rage” ability, which states that the unit starts with a Rage score of 0, and that score raises by one (to a max of 3) at the end of every combat phase if they’re within 3” of an enemy unit. Then, that rage score is added to the Attacks characteristic of their mount’s teeth and claws attack each time they attack. It’s a very clean representation of the beast catching the scent of its prey.
Also releasing this week is the Saurus Scar-Veteran On Aggradon, which is sort of like a beefed up version of the Aggradon Lancer. A Hero, this unit of 1 also has the Primal Rage ability, and a special ability called “Alpha Roar,” which raises the Rage count of nearby Aggradons by 1.
Warhammer Age of Sigmar Seraphon - Saurus Astrolith Bearer
Finally, let’s talk about the Saurus Astrolith Bearer, who’s key purpose in your army is to walk around like a tank-y focus point for all your other spellcasters. With his “Celestial Conduit” special ability, he adds 1 to casting rolls for all friendly Wizards within 12” of him, and extends the range of those wizards’ spells by an extra 6”. He also grants friendly Seraphon a 6+ ward save if they’re within 12” of him.
What I like about the Saurus Astrolith Bearer is that he’s also really hardy, with a 4+ save and 6 wounds. So you can keep him close to some squishier spellcasters in your crew, and buff them while taking the brunt of the damage (mind you, you’ll still be pounding your enemies to a pulp with his warclub and “Mighty Saurus Jaws” special ability, which lets him make “bite rolls” against enemies).
What do you think of these new Seraphon models? If you have a Seraphon army, will any of these be making the cut on your list? Let us know!
