For so many their history in the world of the Forgotten Realms didn't start with early editions of Dungeons & Dragons but instead started with the many novels to come out of the worlds of Dungeons & Dragons. The most famous character from these novels is no doubt Drizzt Do'Urden from R. A. Salvatore's Icewind Dale Trilogy, and later the Dark Elf Trilogy.
It is now the 35th anniversary of Drizzt and with that WizKids have released two collections of Minis called Icons of the Realms The Legend of Drizzt Tabletop Companions and Icons of the Realms The Legend of Drizzt Family & Foes.
The Legend of Drizzt Tabletop Companions Miniatures
The Tabletop Companions make up the party of friends and future family that Drizzt ends up growing to love over the course of his adventures. The immediate feeling you'll get looking at this party assembled is that they're ready for action.
Drizzt stands ready with his two blades out, one of which is pointed towards a foe, Catti-brie stands with bow drawn, Wulfgar hammer aloft, and Artemis ready to get into action. Even Guenhwyvar, Drizzt's magical panther, is bowing low ready to pounce.
Regularly in these collections of minis from Wizkids, you'll get figures in a healthy mix of idle and attack positions. For this party, it's great to see them all in a like-minded state, even as miniatures they're working together.
Unfortunately for Drizzt, there is a bit of an issue between his deep grey skin tone, and his white facial hair features that almost leave him looking like a completely blank slate.
The Legend of Drizzt Family & Foes Miniatures
The Family & Foes Miniatures contains another set of Drizzt and Guenhwyvar, as well as a collection of repeating characters from the series. It makes sense that in a box celebrating the 35th anniversary of Drizzt, he's likely to show up in them all.
A nice touch for those who pick up both is that Drizzt and Guenhwyvar are posed differently in each. It's a small difference but there's something nice about having different stances for the same miniature, especially if you ever plan to use them in other situations where you might need a Panther or Drow Ranger.
The other miniatures you'll get in the Family & Foes box are Zaknafiend Do'Urden, Malice Do'Urden the High Priestess of Lolth, Jarlaxle Baenre, Triel Baenre, and Gromph Baenre.
While Guenhwyvar, Drizzt, and Zaknafiend are at the ready in full attack, the minis of Jarlaxle is standing in a more relaxed pose with his sword to his side, and the other Do'Urdens are standing in a neutral pose.
The features on these drow are all far more pronounced which is excellent to see. Even from a distance the white eyebrows that sit upon their serious eyes can be seen and understood. The intricacies of their outfits, whether it be multiple layers or shining buckles and clasps are also lovely to see.
What are our final thoughts on the Wizkids The Legend of Drizzt 35th Anniversary Minis?
Once again Wizkids has done a great job grouping together a set of miniatures that players would want to get their hands on. Whether it be for collector purposes or to have Drizzt and his party show up in your game (perhaps an evil campaign?) this is a fun collection to own.
There is, as always, lost quality in the faces of minis if you look closely at them. Playing with them on the table in front of you though you'll likely not notice this though.
For utility purposes the is also a great collection of different minis exuding "main character" energy that could also be substituted as player characters for any table.
Should you buy Wizkids The Legend of Drizzt 35th Anniversary Minis?
For fans of Drizzt, his party, and adventures these minis might not show the same love as a bust or statue but if you're interested in having a version of Drizzt that you can put on the table in a campaign this is a great collection to own.
As always there's the versatility of minis that means if you're interested in more minis to have for your D&D games that could work as player characters, or are expecting to use multiple unique drow for your games then you'll quickly get all you need here and more.
