If you are familiar with board games, you have heard about Wingspan. Elizabeth Hargrave's cozy competitive game about managing a bird reserve has received its share of expansions and videogame ports. What could be better? How about Wyrmspan, a game about maintaining a dragon sanctuary?

The Wyrmspan Announcement

According to an official press release from Stonemaier Games, Wyrmspan is a board game greatly inspired by Wingspan. it is still a competitive experience for 1-5 players with tableau and engine-building elements.

You can keep birds happy. How about dragons?

However, there are some key differences aside from tails and scales. Wyrmspan will be notably more complex. Your sanctuary begins with 3 excavated spaces: the Crimson Cavern, Golden Grotto, and Amethys Abyss. Throughout the game, you will need to excavate more spaces and entice dragons to live in those spaces.

But that is easier said than done. Dragons have different personalities. There are dragon hatchlings as well as adult dragons to entice. Different cave sections have cards that carry their own unique traits. And there are different dragon guilds you will need to earn the favor of.

Add to that the fact that this board game contains over 180 different types of dragon and all of that complexity adds up to a more involved board game experience.

In addition, Wyrmspan features a robust Automa solo mode, is colorblind friendly, contains FSC-certified eco-friendly components, and has a free lifetime replacement parts service.

While both games have similar underlying systems, due to these unique elements Wyrmspan is not compatible with Wingspan or any of its expansions.

Wyrmspan was partly developed by Elizabeth Hargrave, designed by Connie Vogelmann, the same creative mind behind the award-winning Apiary, and illustrated by Clementine Compardou.

The game will be available to everyone on January 31 with a retail release in late March.
