In this guide, we'll tell you what you need for every Enshrouded Flame Upgrade and how your Flame Altar helps you survive the ruined world of Embervale.

Enshrouded puts players in the deadly world of Embervale, a land that has been overtaken by a magical Shroud full of mutated monsters.

Though you'll spend a fair amount of time hunting for resources on the map, you'll always want to have somewhere to return home -- and the Flame Altar is the center of your base. Read on to learn everything you need to know about it!

How a Flame Altar Works

Flame Altars serve as the centerpiece of your base. You can't build anywhere without placing a Flame Altar down first. In addition, a Flame Altar serves as a Fast Travel point on the map.

Interacting with a Flame Altar will give you four options:

  • Upgrade Altar: Spend resources to extend the length, width, and height of your building area.
  • Strengthen the Flame: Increases the power of your character with the following:
    • Altar Activation Capacity: Allows you to activate additional Flame Altars and place more bases throughout the world.
    • Shroud Passage Level: Allows you to move into Deadly Shroud/Red Shroud of the next level. If you can't enter a Deadly Shroud area, you'll need to upgrade your Flame to the next level.
    • Character Attribute Bonuses: A flat bonus to all of your core stats.
    • Time in the Shroud: How long you can naturally survive in the Shroud (not counting Deadly Shroud/Red Shroud).
  • Reset Skills: Spend resources to reset your skills.
  • Extinguish Flame: Destroys the Flame Altar and frees up a slot so you can build one elsewhere.

Strengthening the Flame applies to your character, but each Flame Altar must be individually upgraded if you wish to have a larger area to build.

In addition to these benefits, the Flame Altar is a good source of the Rested buff -- simply sit down next to it to gain its benefits. It's not as good as resting in a nice furnished home, but it's better than nothing!

How to Craft a Flame Altar

You can craft a Flame Altar in your Inventory crafting menu using 5 Stone. Stone can be picked up on the ground near the starting area or acquired by mining rocks with a Pickaxe.

How to Place a Flame Altar

You can place a Flame Altar by putting it on your hotbar and selecting that hotbar icon. Then, simply place it on the ground.

Flame Altars cannot be placed within the Shroud. You'll also need to place it on relatively flat ground that's free of obstacles or other obstructions.

How to Move a Flame Altar

Unfortunately, you cannot move a Flame Altar. If you need to move a Flame Altar, you'll have to click "Extinguish Flame" to destroy an existing Flame Altar and then rebuild it elsewhere.

The area protected by your Flame Altar (and its contents) will reset after a short time or after you restart the game. If you wish to move a Flame Altar from one location to another within your base, it's probably a good idea to build a second Flame Altar and then destroy the original to ensure coverage.

Enshrouded Flame Upgrade Guide - Strengthening the Flame from Level 5 to Leve 6

Every Enshrouded Flame Upgrade

Here is what you need for every Enshrouded Flame Upgrade. We'll also detail the stat bonuses that you get from strengthening the Flame!

Level 2 Upgrade

Stats

  • Altar Activation Capacity: 4
  • Shroud Passage Level: 3
  • Character Attribute Bonuses: 2
  • Time in the Shroud: 6 minutes

Sacrificial Offerings

  • 5 Resin
  • 5 Red Mushroom
  • 5 Bones
  • 5 Shroud Liquid
  • 1 Spark
  • 5 Animal Fur
  • 1 Fell Thunderbrute Head

As you might expect, your first upgrade is based around the starting area called the Springlands. You can easily get most of the resources nearby, but you'll also need to go deep into an Elixir Well to kill a Fell Thunderbrute and get its head.

Level 3 Upgrade

Stats

  • Altar Activation Capacity: 6
  • Shroud Passage Level: 3
  • Character Attribute Bonuses: 2
  • Time in the Shroud: 7 minutes

Sacrificial Offerings

  • 10 Wax
  • 10 Salt
  • 5 Spark
  • 10 Shroud Wood
  • 10 Flintstone
  • 10 Charcoal
  • 1 Scavenger Matron Head

Many of these items are still available in the Springlands, but you'll have to head up to the Hill of Scavengers to get your hands on a Scavenger Matron Head.

Level 4 Upgrade

Stats

  • Altar Activation Capacity: 7
  • Shroud Passage Level: 4
  • Character Attribute Bonuses: 3
  • Time in the Shroud: 8 minutes

Sacrificial Offerings

  • 15 Goo
  • 15 Mycelium
  • 10 Spark
  • 15 Indigo Plant
  • 15 Amber
  • 15 Copper Ore
  • 1 Fell Wispwyvern Head

Most of these items are found in Revelwood, a forested area north of the Springlands. You'll also need to work with the Alchemist NPC to make Goo. As for the Fell Wispwyvern Head, you're going to have to go to Pikemead's Reach, far to the northeast of the Revelwood Ancient Spire - a place you'll need to go for a series of quests anyway.

Level 5 Upgrade

Stats

  • Altar Activation Capacity: 8
  • Shroud Passage Level: 5
  • Character Attribute Bonuses: 4
  • Time in the Shroud: 9 minutes

  • 20 Fossilized Bone
  • 20 Spark
  • 20 Ammonia Gland
  • 20 Tin Ore
  • 20 Rooibos
  • 1 Fell Monstrosity Head

Getting the Level 5 Flame Altar upgrade requires that you head northeast to the Nomad Highlands biome. Mint Mushroom Meat and Ammonia Glands will require you to dip into the Shroud. The Fell Monstrosity Head can be found at several points of interest in the area; the most convenient location is probably northwest of the Nomand Highlands Ancient Spire.

Level 6 Upgrade

Stats

  • Altar Activation Capacity: 8
  • Shroud Passage Level: 6
  • Character Attribute Bonuses: 5
  • Time in the Shroud: 10 minutes

Sacrificial Offerings

  • 40 Sulfur
  • 40 Saffron
  • 40 Spark
  • 40 Iron Ore
  • 40 Lapis Lazuli
  • 40 Yucca Fruit
  • 1 Fell Sicklescythe Head

Getting the Level 6 Flame Altar Upgrade is going to require you to travel into the Kindlewastes. Most of these resources are fairly easy to get, but killing a Fell Sicklescythe will be a real challenge. You can find Fell Sicklescythes in some of the Sun Temples and Elixir Wells in the area.
